Carl Carmody – Came to the Lord out of a Roman Catholic background in August 1981.  After finishing studies at Curtin University in Film, TV and Journalism I met my wife Carolyn in 1982 and we were married in January 1983.  We came into the work of Challenge Newspaper in March 1983.  My present role is one of managing editor and CEO of Challenge Literature Fellowship.  We have 3 daughters – Hannah (21), Micah (19) and Rachel (17).

Current Ministry
Our current field assignment involves the distribution of Challenge newspaper into Australia, New Zealand, Southern and Central Africa, South America and the United States. In New Zealand our present distribution of the paper varies between 10,000 to 15,000 per month; 60,000 plus for Australia and 250,000 to 300,000 bi-monthly into southern Africa; 15,000 bi-monthly into Kenya and 25,000 Argentina and Uruguay. Of the papers that we print in southern Africa some 60,000 of those constitute a special prison edition of the paper which goes into 252 prisons reaching some 250,000 prisoners plus all of the prison guards and numerous administration staff for the prison facilities. We also have permission to go into every prison in Botswana and we are slowly taking up that opportunity as time and staff allows us. The paper is also distributed into other surrounding countries: 30,000 Zimbabwe, 20,000 Zambia, 15,000 Botswana and a special Face the Nation paper dealing with HIV/AIDS for Botswana and possibly other surrounding nations.

We commenced working with Pastor Paul Dondoh (Peace Makers International) in Kenya about 24 months ago and are now distributing 15,000 papers every two months into that country. To date seventeen new churches have been planted and the work continues to grow. We are hopeful of increasing this print run to 100,000 so we can reach the surrounding seven nations also.
 
Our work into New Zealand was done under the banner of the Challenge Weekly, and we are looking to now partner with CLC.
 
In Australia at present we are distributing over 60,000 papers per month around the nation which is a very modest figure and we are very keen to expand this figure. We are distributing at the moment predominately through the churches, mission organisations and interested individuals. On top of this we are continuing to look to increase our print run into South Africa, as we would like to boost it to 1 million papers per edition.
 
March 2006 we commenced producing our first language (Spanish) edition of the Challenge newspaper into Argentina with an initial print run of 10,000 papers. We have been working closely with a Christian organisation called Word of Life over in South America and Will & Ale Herndon. We are now printing 25,000 of which 20,000 go into Argentina and 5,000 into Uruguay

Prayer Requests
PERSONAL:
1. Carolyn and I would really value prayer for our girls and especially for our middle girl Micah who has recently been married. Micah has two more years at college so please pray with us that Micah will be able to strike the right balance in all she does. Please pray for our other two girls also that the Lord will keep them in their walk with Him and enable them to really count for Jesus in their walk and ministry. Rachel commences college this year studying Nursing and Hannah has commenced working at Royal Perth Hospital.

2. We would value ongoing prayer for our marriage and relationship as there are many things that compete for our time which can often lead to real tiredness and all the associated problems that come from that. We would value ongoing prayer that the Lord would develop that spiritual and personal oneness in our marriage that is so important.

3. We would value prayer for the leadership role Carl has in what is a small but strategic work of Challenge newspaper. We would value prayer that the Lord would help us strike a balance with the demands of ministry and also the important decisions that need to be made.

MINISTRY:
4. We would value prayer for our new Australian promotion and development staff member Andrew Trezona. Andrew and his wife Karen have five daughters so this is a huge step in coming into the work of Challenge newspaper. Obviously we would value prayer for finances and for the Lord’s enabling grace and strength to settle him into his new role and allow him to catch on quickly to all that needs to happen in promoting and developing the work to churches and different mission organizations.

5. We would value prayer for a new editor as Carl really feels the need to concentrate on the overarching leadership responsibility involved in putting out the paper in so many different places. We are praying for God’s man or women for this task and that it gives us an opportunity to develop and improve the quality of the paper for each country in which we are working.

6. We would really value your prayer for the new opportunities that are coming up this year particularly reaching out to Egypt., Malawi and India. We will be working in partnership with Pro Christo Outreach in Malawi as we do with them in Zambia, and then we will be working with Asia Evangelistic Fellowship in the city of Hyderabad in India and we hope then to go onto other cities around India. Finally we will be looking at the possibilities of putting out an English/Arabic edition of the paper for the city of Cairo in Egypt. We are also looking to see the other areas of ministry around the world increase both in terms of the distribution of the paper as well as the effectiveness of the paper.
 
7. We would value prayer for what is a relatively new country in Uruguay and also for the opportunities of going into Brazil to distribute our first edition of a Portuguese newspaper. We will be doing this in cooperation with Harold Peasley’s twin brother and it is hoped this will commence in the month of July 2008.
 
8. With all that is going on in this work we would really value prayer for the ongoing financial need for our work both at home with new staff appointments, not only with Andrew, but also with a new part time man coming on board working in the state of Victoria on Australia’s east coast. As well as prayer for the ongoing financial needs for Southern and Central Africa and for South America. We would value prayer for the spread of the paper in the United States and that out of this would not only come an effective evangelistic tool but also mission support from those churches who use the paper.

9. We would value prayer for the whole Challenge team. At this time we have 13 different staff members working here in Perth as well as staff in South Africa, in Argentina, United States and India. We are really praying for a unity in vision and mind and heart. We would value prayer for the wise planning and development of each of the areas we are working in, so that we can work towards a degree of self sufficiency in some areas and total self sufficiency in the others so that will allow us to increase our print run.
